AC-coupled vs DC-coupled battery systems
A battery can be added to a property in two main ways. DC-coupled systems connect the battery directly to a hybrid inverter alongside the solar array, typically the more efficient route for new solar-plus-battery installations because power is converted fewer times. AC-coupled systems use a separate battery inverter and can be retrofitted to an existing solar installation without replacing the original solar inverter, making them the more practical choice when adding storage to a system installed some time ago. We assess which approach suits your existing equipment and new installation goals during the survey.
Battery sizing and usable capacity
Battery capacity is normally quoted in kWh, but usable capacity — the amount that can actually be charged and discharged in day-to-day use — is what matters for sizing. We size batteries against your evening and overnight consumption (for solar-led systems) or against the volume you'd realistically want to shift onto a cheap overnight rate (for tariff-led systems), rather than fitting the largest unit available regardless of whether it will be regularly used to capacity.
Retrofitting to an existing solar PV system
Batteries are commonly added to solar systems installed years earlier.
