What EV charge point installation involves

Installing a dedicated electric vehicle charge point means running a correctly rated electrical supply from your consumer unit or distribution board out to a wall-mounted or post-mounted charging unit, fitted with the right protective devices, cabling and load management for your property. It is a distinct piece of electrical work from a standard socket, and it needs to be designed around your existing supply, your parking arrangement and how the vehicle will actually be used, whether that is a single household car or a fleet of company vehicles charging overnight.

Who needs it

Homeowners moving to an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle need a home charge point that is faster, safer and more convenient than trailing a cable from an indoor socket. Landlords and housing providers are increasingly asked for charging provision by tenants. Employers, retailers, hospitality operators and public sector sites need workplace charging for staff, fleet vehicles or visiting customers, often across multiple bays. When it is needed

What happens when this is left alone

Charging from a standard socket

Using a three-pin socket and trailing lead for regular EV charging puts a sustained heavy load through a circuit and socket that were never designed for hours of continuous high current. It is slow, and it increases the risk of an overheated socket or circuit over time.

Getting the supply assessment wrong

Not every property or site has spare capacity on its existing electrical supply. Installing a charge point without properly assessing the incoming supply, earthing arrangement and any other high-demand loads can lead to nuisance tripping, an unsafe installation, or a unit that has to be removed and redone.

Domestic charge point installation

For homes, we run a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit to a wall-mounted charge point, typically fitted to an external wall near your driveway or garage. We assess your existing supply capacity, earthing system and cable route on survey, and specify the protective devices needed for a safe, compliant installation under Part P.

Workplace and fleet charging

For employers, retailers and fleet operators, we design multi-bay installations that may include several charge points sharing a single supply, using load management to distribute available capacity across bays without exceeding what the site can safely provide. This is relevant for staff car parks, customer parking and dedicated fleet charging yards.

Supply assessment and earthing

Every installation begins with an assessment of the incoming electrical supply and the property's earthing arrangement. Some properties, particularly those on a TT earthing system or with limited existing capacity, need additional protective measures or a different charge point specification, which is identified at survey rather than discovered on installation day.
